Alzheimer’s Support & Help
Alzheimer’s disease is a horrible, awful condition that is just as stressful for family members, loved ones and caregivers as it is for the actual sufferer themselves, and therefore Alzheimer’s support and help is a vital component in coping with the disease for all involved.
For the actual Alzheimer’s sufferer the support and help of loved ones and friends is essential. As the disease advances the individual becomes more and more dependent on others to live as normal a life as Alzheimer’s permits them to do so, which gradually decreases with progression.
During the first stages of the disease most sufferers can cope with everyday tasks such as dressing themselves, going to the toilet and even going off to work for example, but as Alzheimer’s progresses life can become very uncomfortable for the individual where everyday tasks are a tough obstacle to negotiate at the best of times.
If you have a loved one or a friend who has Alzheimer’s and you have decided you are going to be responsible for caring for this individual then you yourself will need your own support network as the disease affects those involved in unimaginable ways too, often both emotionally and physiologically.
Can you imagine having to inform a loved one every day who you are, what your name is and what your relationship is with that person? That could well happen as the condition worsens. Emotionally Alzheimer’s is one of the most painful diseases known to man.
Much like Cancer or Aids the visual impact of seeing a loved one deteriorate so rapidly before one’s own eyes is a very traumatic experience to undergo, especially for sons and daughters and indeed grandchildren of the affected individual.
It is therefore essential that you and your family learn as much as you can about the disease not only from professionals but others who are looking after a loved one or a friend with Alzheimer’s or have previously experience of doing so.
Thankfully there are many support groups or chapters in most major cities the world over set up by individuals and organizations either funded privately or through state that are designed to support the supporters if you like. Be sure to check your local support centers for such groups or use the Internet as virtual support communities are common place today.
For professional caregivers the support of the direct family of the Alzheimer’s sufferer is also essential. Often it is heart rendering to leave the care and well being of loved ones in the hands of “outsiders”, but trust is very important. They are called professionals for a reason!
And it doesn’t stop there either. What of the actual professional caregiver themselves? Well, working closely with someone every day or over the course of a number of years, a strong emotional bond or fondness for that person will no doubt develop, and again, this can have a strong effect on the caregiver. They need support too.
